Burj Khalifa vs Mount Everest: How Many Burjs Tall?

Updated October 27, 2026

Verdict

Mount Everest is about 10.7 times the height of the Burj Khalifa: 8,849 m against 828 m. But that compares a summit measured from sea level with a building measured from its own base. Closer matches: El Capitan's face, about 914 m, is only some 86 m taller than the Burj, and Angel Falls' longest single drop, 807 m, is 21 m shorter.

The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world, at 828 m to its architectural top. Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth above sea level: a joint survey by China and Nepal, announced in 2020, measured it at 8,848.86 m (29,032 ft), which rounds to 8,849 m (Wikipedia). Stack Burj Khalifas on top of each other and you need about 10.7 of them to reach Everest's summit. Natural landmarks closer to the Burj's size make better comparisons: Yosemite's El Capitan rises about 3,000 ft (914 m) from the valley floor, and Angel Falls in Venezuela drops 979 m in total. This page runs the numbers for each, then explains why a building and a mountain are not measured the same way. For the Burj's own height in detail, see how tall is the Burj Khalifa.

Everest in Burj Khalifas

Divide 8,848.86 m by 828 m and you get 10.69. So Mount Everest is roughly 10 and a half to 11 Burj Khalifas tall, depending on rounding. In feet: Everest is about 29,032 ft and the Burj about 2,717 ft. Even the Burj's highest public floor, The Lounge at 585 m, is less than one fifteenth of the way to Everest's summit. The Everest figure comes from a joint survey by Nepalese and Chinese authorities, announced in December 2020; earlier surveys gave slightly different numbers, which is why you will still see 8,848 m in older sources (Wikipedia, "Mount Everest"). El Capitan and Angel Falls

Two natural walls are close to the Burj Khalifa's height. El Capitan, the granite monolith in Yosemite National Park, rises about 3,000 ft (914 m) from base to top, according to Wikipedia: roughly 86 m more than the Burj. The first ascent, in 1958, took 47 days of siege climbing; in 2017 Alex Honnold free-soloed it in under four hours. Angel Falls in Venezuela, the world's tallest uninterrupted waterfall, falls 979 m in total, with a longest single drop of 807 m. The full fall is about 151 m taller than the Burj, while the single drop is 21 m shorter. The Burj has had its own climber: Alain Robert scaled the spire on 28 March 2011, in 6 hours, with rope and harness. See who climbed the Burj Khalifa.

Why the comparison misleads

A building is measured from the ground it stands on. A mountain's height is measured from sea level. Everest's summit is 8,849 m above the sea, but the mountain does not start at sea level: it rises from the high ground of the Himalayas, so its height above the land around it is far less than 8,849 m. The Burj Khalifa is measured from its own base in Downtown Dubai, the way the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat measures every tower. El Capitan's 914 m is measured the other way, base to top, which is why it compares well with the Burj. If the question is how big something looks from its foot, El Capitan and the Burj are the fairer pair.

Feeling the height from the decks

You cannot stand on Everest without an expedition, but you can stand 452 m up the Burj Khalifa with a timed ticket. Levels 124 and 125 started at $51 per person on 27 October 2026 (AED 189, at 1 USD = 3.6725 AED). Level 148, at 555 m, started at $109 and adds skip-the-line access and a lounge. From up there you look down on Downtown Dubai and out to the coast and the desert. Both tickets offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
